Plant Pathology Lab serves the educational and research needs of the Department of Agriculture, Crop Production and Rural Environment, regarding all aspects of Plant Pathology, such as: (a) causal agents of plant diseases (fungi, prokaryotes, viruses, as well as lack of minerals, weather conditions, water stress etc), (b) reactions (molecular, biochemical) of the plant as response to the invasion of the pathogens, (c) environmental factors affecting the progress of the disease, (d) disease control based on chemical, biological and other means.
Research Activities:
Chemical control of plant diseases / Resistance of plant pathogens to fungicides.
Molecular detection of phytoplasmas.
Detection of mycotoxins and mycotoxin producing fungi in amylaceous products and processed tomatoes.
Molecular detection of viruses in trees.
Transmission of plant viruses by vectors.
Research Projects:
"Diagnosis and epidemiology studies of certain diseases of tomato caused by viruses and prokaryotes with the aid of molecular techniques". The project is co–funded by the EU and The Helenic Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs. Duration: 2005–2007.
Laboratory Infrastructure:
Equipment for isolation of plant pathogens (fungi, bacteria) from hosts. a.Refrigerators, freezers (-20 oC), microscopes, stereoscopes, laminar air flow cabinets, incubators, autoclave, ovens.
Basic molecular biology equipment. a.PCR cycler, bench top centrifuges, horizontal and vertical electrophoresis units, UV transiluminator, fume hood.
